Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy is a movie based on an unsung hero of the southern soil of India. Unfortunately, our Indian history under the rule of Britishers is restricted to Mahatma Gandhi, Bhagat Singh, Mangal Pandey and Rani Lakshmi Bai due to which we never got to know one of the very first fighters who ignited the souls of the people for the freedom we deserved. Narasimha Reddy is a figure that is shunned and ridiculed by the Britishers in their history books as a petty poligar but in reality, was the first form of aggression and resistance against the imperialist forces.
Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy is one such creation of the southern film industry which keeps on reminding Bollywood that it still has a lot to improvise. Whether it be dialogues or the making of every single scene, everything is centric towards the passion of nationalism. The story of the film is based on the Independence struggle where a freedom fighter named Narasimha Reddy who is not going to bow down to the Britishers and rebelled against them till his last breath. But why don’t we know anything about him?
HISTORY OF THE UNSUNG HERO:
During the early colonial period, when the Britishers were expanding their rule, Indian rulers were being oppressed by them. The Britishers used to exploit them and were forcefully collecting taxes from the locals. People feared them due to their power but some were the bravehearts who just refused to be enslaved. Uyyalawada Narasimha Reddy of Rayalaseema Region was one of them. Narasimha Reddy was born in 1806. He was a great leader who had 66 villages under him and was ruling a large army of 2000 men. Narasimha Reddy was observing the corrupt officers of East India Company and when the Rayalaseema Region was transferred to Britishers, he refused to pay direct taxes to them. In June of the year 1846, Narasimha raided the treasury at Koilakuntla and even killed the Forest Ranger to which the British officers issued orders to arrest him. Even after this Narasimha Reddy attacked Britishers camped at Gidaluru in July 1846. The british forces were still not able to capture him so they captured his family instead. Narsimha Reddy returned back and was arrested. A trial was conducted and Narsimha Reddy was charged for the revolt, murder and was convicted a dacoit. Reddy was hanged publicly on 22nd February 1847 and his head was kept on the wall of a fort for 30 years so that could dare to revolt against the Britishers.
PLOT OF MOVIE:
Uyyalawada Narasimha Reddy was a born leader and is believed to have divine powers as well as huge strength. During his teenage years he came across the harsh reality of the enslaved civilians and how they are being taxed. Under the guidance of sage Gosayi Venkanna, Narasimha Reddy learnt philosophy and combat and he swore to retaliate to the forceful tax collection in the city of Renadu where after 25 years he gathered fallen kings and chiefs from all the provinces. When the officers came to know about the resistance by Reddy, the kingdoms were taken over by the troops of the governor of Madras and ordered one of his men to forcefully collect taxes.
Meanwhile Narasimha Reddy meets Lakshmi who fell in love with him but he is not able to do anything about it due to his child marriage which has already been conducted to a girl named Siddhamma. Heartbroken Lakshmi attempts suicide but Narsimha convinces her to give life another chance. Later on, we see that the officer named Jackson was asked to collect taxes forcefully, raid and kill villagers of the surrounding area of Renadu who speak against him. Upon this Reddy himself goes to Jackson’s house and beheads him along with his soldiers. Resistance grows and the battle for Independence continues. Reddy led his army and Cochrane, the mayor of Madras was leading the Britishers to kill the chiefs and kings which were rebelling against them.
