Logan’s Run takes place sometime in the 23rd century in a city under a glass dome. Back in the earlier centuries overpopulation brought about wars and ensuing ecological disasters. Once these were over the remaining survivors built the city and regulated their life inside the dome. Review by SAndmanJuly 8, 2009 Director: Michael Anderson Writers:novels: William F. The purifier is one of the secondary characters we meet in The Chronicles of Riddick. In that respect, he is unique among our anti-heroes. All the others are protagonists, first-tier characters in their movies. When he makes an entrance he is just one of the many Necromonger dignitaries – and not particularly likable either! Yet as the movie progresses his character deepens. This has mostly to do with his penchant for dropping probing comments which imply more than they explain.…

Judge Dredd, the ultimate tough-as-nails lawman from comic books, makes it to the silver screen. Big comic book fan, my first response was, this better be good, as a matter of fact, this better is awesome, or it’s going to fall flat on its face. Aeon Flux movie is a visual treat in the post-apocalyptic/dystopian subgenre. The back story explains that in the year 2011 a deadly virus wiped out 99 percent of the world’s population. The scientist Trevor Goodchild developed a cure and 5 million of those who remained were crammed into a city called Bregna, which became the last refuge of mankind. The Goodchild family ruled the city for four centuries. Review by SAndmanJuly 11, 2009 Director: Karyn Kusama Writers:screenplay: Phil Hay and Matt Manfredicharacters: Peter…

Dark City is a movie that grows in the watching. Every time I saw it had a few aces up its sleeve. I loved the original plot, loved the surreal setting, loved the haunting look and feel of the movie. However, if you’re looking for a popcorn flick, be warned. Dark City is not a straightforward story. This movie blends mystery, a detective story, and a soul quest. At the beginning of the movie The Thing, we find MacReady by himself in his shack. The first scene firmly establishes his character. He’s a loner. Also, he’s playing Chess Wizard. This reveals another trait of his character. He’s a tactician. True, he’s losing at the moment, though he does not know it. However, it remains academic whether he lost the single most important game of his life – against a lethal shapeshifting alien. He also has a short temper. He pours whiskey…

Walter Kovacs, aka Rorschach, the masked avenger from Watchmen, comes from an abusive background, he was molested by his mother, bullied by his peers, and one day as the young up-and-coming vigilante he witnessed a gruesome tragedy – an exceptionally brutal murder of a little girl at the hands of a petty criminal. “Whatever was left of Walter Kovacs,” he says at one point,” died that night with that girl.” But the hardened, unrelenting crime-fighter Rorschach…

Starman is a beautiful 80s movie with a very simple idea – humanity’s first contact with extraterrestrial intelligence. In the hands of a lesser artist this many times rehashed premise would probably not make more than an average movie, but in the hands of the maestro John Carpenter it becomes a true classic.
