A long while ago in the UK on TV I saw a black and white B movie that seemed to have a very similar story to Ridley Scott’s Alien, even to the point that the alien exited via the door, from what I can remember. Can anyone tell me what this is called?

From SF Movie Explorers:

The science-fiction movie you are looking for is called It! The Terror from Beyond Space.

This movie, besides the film Planet of the Vampires and various other sources like Clifford D. Simak short story “Junkyard” – listed in David McIntee’s book Beautiful Monsters: The Unofficial and Unauthorized Guide to the Alien and Predator Films, was a great inspiration for Dan O’Bannon while he was writing a screenplay for Alien.

The film was released in 1958, it was directed by Edward L. Cahn. The cast included Marshall Thompson, Shawn Smith, Kim Spalding, Ann Doran, Dabbs Greer.

Actor/stuntman Ray “Crash” Corrigan played the humanoid alien IT.

According to It! The Terror from Beyond Space movie trivia:

Here is a brief summary:

After a tragic mission to Mars, another ship is sent to bring back the sole survivor Col. Edward Carruthers. He is accused of killing his crew on Red Planet and awaits trial when they come back although he claims he is innocent.

On the journey back to Earth the crew soon realizes that they have an uninvited alien passenger on board. They have to hunt it down if they are to stand any chance of reaching home alive.
